Marcos Zegers is a Chilean photographer whose work moves between art and documentary photography, drawing from his background as an architect to explore the relationship between human beings and the territory.
From the beginning, his photography has focused on rural ways of life, human settlements, and the impact of extractive activities on the landscape. Through carefully composed and contemplative images, he offers a reflection on the sociocultural dilemmas and territorial conflicts of Latin America from an interdisciplinary and multi-scale perspective.
Among his most recognized works is his long-term project in the Atacama Desert, which examines Chile’s extractivist model. This body of work has been widely exhibited in festivals and galleries and culminated in the publication of his book The Mineral Landscape has a Celestial Sky and Two White Mountains. Another significant project, The Unknown Story of the 93 Chileans who went to Russia in 1973, has been featured in multiple international media outlets, including The New York Times.
In 2023, he co-founded the collective “Otro Habitar” with architect and geographer Magdalena Ulloa, aiming to develop interdisciplinary projects that visualize themes related to rural habitation. His photographs are part of both public and private permanent collections.
Zegers has exhibited in Chile, Shanghai, Paris Photo, AIPAD New York, Photo London, Gexto, Format, and Photo España. He received the POY (Picture of the Year) Latam 2019 award in the environmental category and was selected for the World Press Photo 6×6 Global Talent Program the same year. In 2020, he participated in the prestigious Joop Swart Masterclass organized by World Press Photo.
In 2024, he was named a National Geographic Explorer. He currently focuses on documentary and architectural photography, working as a freelance photographer for The New York Times, various international media outlets, and collaborating with local and academic organizations dedicated to territorial development.
